The operation of the ionic, cationic and anionic exchange resins is based on the ion exchange of the aqueous solution and the mobile ion of the active group of the resin.
There are four main types of ion exchange resins: strong cationic, weak cationic, strong anionic and weak anion. The resins may be more or less selective, their choice being dependent on the intended application.
When the exchange capacity of the resin is depleted, the resins are regenerated with a regenerating solution containing the mobile ion which is initially attached to the active group of the resin.
